Chavez Votes Himself Prez For Life

with 6 comments

The Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez has anointed himself president for life by proposing sweeping changes to the country’s constitution.

“We have broken the chains of the old, exploitative capitalist system,” said Chavez. “The state now has the obligation to build the model of a socialist economy.”

While the president was talking about “the death of capitalism” in Venezuela, the opposition were lamenting what they called the death of democracy.

“The president just tells lies,” said Manuel Rosales, the opposition leader defeated in last year’s presidential elections. “All he wants to do is turn himself into president for life.”

The changes will make Venezuela yet more dependent on its oil sector, which thanks to high oil prices and some of the largest reserves outside the Middle East, ensures Chavez is awash with “petrodollars”.

The armed forces, which have already adopted the salute “Fatherland, socialism or death”, will have their mission enshrined as being “patriotic and anti-imperialist” in their defense of Venezuela against the United States, which considers Chavez a threat to its influence in the region.

As Chavez’s speech drew to a close he said: “I doubt there is any country on this planet with a democracy more alive than the one we enjoy in Venezuela today.”

Do the people of Venezuela want be ruled by a socialist dictator or do they want freedom? It appears we will know soon enough.

  2. Hi fernando

Chavez is growing in power day by day. Soon he will have total control over every aspect of Venezuelan life. Even now he has made great strides toward socialism and if the people don’t rise up in mass “now” they had better get use to the idea of a Socialist lifestyle.

Hopefully the people of Venezuela will act before violence is the only option.

  3. Hi LC,

It’s just the new Cuba. Really, there’s been a steady stream of American liberals flying down there to cheer Chavez on, mostly because they sense a change coming in Cuba when Castro finally kicks the bucket. Really, what would the left do without an example of a communist nation surviving in our hemisphere? Besides, he has lots of oil money to slip them under the table. If a Democrat claims the White House next year, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we didn’t start sending them foreign aid, give them Most Favored Trading status, and slip them some military secrets. You know, like China during the first Clinton Administration.

  4. Hi Grit

Great example. I have no doubt that Chavez has been tutored by Castro on how to best run a socialist government. We can safely assume that Chavez now knows how to best keep the Venezuelan people and US liberals his servants.

Don’t we already send them foreign aid in the form of oil revenues? I keep thinking about all that oil going to waste in Alaska that if used would lessen the influence of these mad dictators types.

  5. “Do the people of Venezuela want be ruled by a socialist dictator or do they want freedom? It appears we will know soon enough.” the question is will it be shouts of joy ,screams or just the angst riddled sigh of disbelief. Good post. Chaves grip is tight and having looked at some local input very much in the spirit of 1933. Let’s hope he doesn’t continue through the years.

  6. Hi in2thefray

You hate to see something like this happen. If allowed, Chavez will inflict nothing but hardship on the people of Venezuela.

We can only speculate as to when the political assassinations will begin. That’s a requirement laid out in the Dummies Handbook for Dictators.
