Fred Thompson – Real Candidate?

with 5 comments

Fred Thompson wins 5 quality points for his position on several hot-button issues and his understanding that there is a threat to Western Civilization from Islam.

He warned that the United States has not come to grips with “the threat that’s facing us in the global war against radical Islamic fundamentalists. We’re dealing with folks that want to bring us to our knees and bring Western civilization to its knees.”

“I am unabashedly pro life, I am pro second amendment, and I don’t apologize for the United States of America,” Thompson said over cheers and applause during a speech at the Iowa State Fair.

“This country has shed more blood for the freedom of other people than all the other nations in the history of the world combined, and I’m tired of people feeling like they’ve got to apologize for America,” said Thompson

However, Thompson lost 1 of the 5 quality points by refusing repeated requests to rule out raising taxes or cutting entitlement programs.

“We are in the process of gradually bankrupting future generations in this country,” Thompson said of Social Security and other entitlement programs that will plunge the federal government deeply into debt over the next decade.

Thompson obviously understands that entitlement programs are what is bankrupting the country, but didn’t talk about how to fix the problem. How a candidate will handle this problem is important and hopefully one he will address in the near future.

This runner is still a wait and see.

  1. horrible trade policy is bankrupting the country. How is Social Security an entitlement when I’ve paid more into it than I can ever hope to reeive from it? I’ll happily take back what they’ve stolen from me if they’ll just drop me from the rolls.

  3. Hi cj

Like all social-ist programs they begin with good intentions and with a little time always go horribly wrong. The only real winners are the people who are now in their blue-haired years receiving many times the amount they paid in. Since this is also the largest block of voters, certain politicians also benefit.

Judging from present day spending levels and fraud, anyone (I’ll be generous) under 40, won’t have to worry. When their time arrives to receive SS, the country will long since be bankrupt and social security will be the least of our worries.

  4. Hi LC,

While Fred is from my State which probably makes me a bit biased, I would point out that he did keep his campaign promise to only hold two terms in the Senate. To me, in these days of confusing politics, even the slightest bit of honesty speaks volumes.

  5. Hi Grit

What an anomaly, a politician keeping a campaign promise.

You know what that means don’t you? On the whole, the people who make it into office are in reality the best liars.

When it comes to politics, knowing that fact can be considered the beginning of wisdom.
